Rustic Fir Dining Table

This Rustic Fir dining table is part of a small Workshop Series, built from fir floor joists salvaged from an early twentieth-century school. The reclaimed material carries the marks of long use, bringing a direct and unembellished presence into a domestic setting.

Each board retains evidence of its prior life—nail holes, subtle splits, aged coloration, and surface wear—which are preserved rather than corrected. These traces remain visible beneath the finish, allowing the material’s history to read clearly without emphasis. The table is constructed using traditional joinery, with breadboard ends secured by exposed splines and a base anchored by a stretcher locked with hand-driven wedges.

Despite its mass, the design is engineered to break down for transport and installation, allowing the table to move into tight or constrained spaces without compromising structure.

In this variation, the surface is fully sanded to soften the texture and reveal warmer tones within the reclaimed fir. The wood is finished with stain and lacquer, providing protection while maintaining a calm, even surface suitable for everyday use.

The result is a table with a more restrained finish that tempers the reclaimed character without erasing it.
