The Pleasant Hill coffee table is built from Douglas fir bleacher material salvaged from a school demolition project in the Bay Area. Once used seating at public events, the wood is reworked here at a quieter domestic scale.
The design draws from Asian and Arts and Crafts traditions, emphasizing balance, restraint, and purposeful construction. Reclaimed fir boards form the primary surface, contrasted by a red Balau inset panel. Curved lines, tapered legs, and subtle pillow detailing soften the architecture, while full-length splines and exposed joinery articulate its structure. Transitions are kept clean, edges are gently eased.
The surface is finished with a hardwax oil, then sealed beneath a nano topcoat to provide durability while preserving the wood’s tactile quality.
