The Pioneer
Bowl and Spoon
Hand-carved live oak burl bowl with accompanying carved wooden spoon
The Pioneer Bowl and Spoon are carved from an uncommon burl on a wind-fallen live oak tree, shaped by decades of slow growth and internal stress.
The bowl is hand-hollowed directly from the burl, retaining its irregular edge, shifting grain, and natural compression marks. No attempt is made to alter its form; the wood establishes the final shape.
An accompanying spoon is carved from a branch taken from the same tree, marked by mistletoe growth. Dense, interlocked grain and subtle distortions guide the spoon’s profile. Together, the two pieces relate through shared origin rather than symmetry.
Both elements are finished by hand with mineral oil, heightening the contrast between burnished interior surfaces and the more rugged exterior contours.
The set functions comfortably in use while also holding its place as a sculptural object.
This piece has been sold and is shown here as a reference—demonstrating how irregular or personally significant material can be translated into a pleasing form. Inquiries are welcome from those considering similar projects.
